Pure Blood is the first feature length film by the Cali Group. Based on Andrés Caicedo’s story, combined with Cali’s macabre legend of the Monster of Mangones, gave Luis Ospina and Alberto Quiroga the initial material for the film’s screenplay. Using vampire lore and B-movies as the primary references, the film is an homage to film enthusiasts and a fierce critique of the Cali society that refused to accept cross-breeding. Although underestimated at its release in 1982, Pure Blood has been praised as an intelligent and ferocious cult film due to its political stance and aesthetics in its style of “tropical Gothic.”
