Program Note
The Araucaima Mansion is the second feature by Carlos Mayolo, based on the prestigious Cervantes Award-winning novel by Colombian writer Álvaro Mutis. The film constructs a story of a young girl who escapes from the set of a commercial and reaches a declining and isolated mansion where the inhabitants indulge in strange pleasures. Sex and violence are always present in the large manor, equivalent to a gothic castle. The six characters sustain a fragile coexistence that seems destined for debacle. As a representative work of tropical gothic, the film maintains the cannibalism actions of the original story and expands upon it into the terrain of cinematographic language.
