Program Note
Daniel arrives at the Afro-Colombian community of La Barra on Colombia’s Pacific coast, trying to flee his past. The upcoming clash between a remote village, modernity—when a landowner tries to build a beach resort—and the town’s circumstances make Daniel’s search more difficult. Oscar Ruiz Navia’s debut feature Crab Trap takes a political and intelligent position on the struggle of Afro-descendent communities in Colombia for a place in society and formal freedom. The film’s political and narrative intelligence are seen when presenting the evident conflict between tradition and innovation, between ruthless capitalism and an economy that is self-sustainable and based on solidarity.
