Program Note
While helping factory workers on strike, Indonesian poet and activist Wiji Thukul is struck in the face and loses the sight from one of his eyes. To find sanctuary during the nationwide crackdown against the People’s Democratic Party that follows the demonstration, he leaves Java for Borneo. Supported by activists, he finds haven in a small village. But his heart can never leave Solo, the town where his wife and two children remain. One by one, his friends are caught, and nobody can tell when and how the suppression will end. However, the most painful thing for him is the concern and worry he has for his loving family. In spite of obvious risks, he decides to meet them again. The director Yosep Anggi, well known for various shorts and his first feature Peculiar Vacation and Other Illnesses (2016), represses his vigor to focus on the inner conflict of the artist in a film that’s based on a true story. Personal happiness and wellbeing must sometimes be sacrificed when one cannot be with nor without their loved ones. (PARK Sungho)
