Preparing for the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which sparked World War I, the Hotel Europe in Sarajevo is busy all day. The EU ambassador arrives at the penthouse for a gala dinner and TV crews are preparing a show commemorating the centennial on the rooftop. Soon the hotel begins to swirl inside: employees are about to stage a strike as they have not been paid their salaries for two months and the hotel manager, Omer, strikes a deal with the gangster Enzo to stop it. This film rewrites the modern history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the most tragic history in 20th century’s Balkan powder keg, in the allegoric space of Hotel Europe. The history of feuds that arose from ideological, political and ethnic conflicts continues in modern European society with the violence of capital and media, and conflicts between class and race. Hotel Europe is not a symbol of bygone trauma but the present battleground where history is proven to repeat, never healing.
