Program Note
A film that questions the idea of “filmmaking” in a chaotic age, an age of division and conflict in Indian society. To Hari, born to a Muslim father and a Hindu mother, India is an achromatic society. Thanks to his parents, who met at a film school in Australia, Hari speaks English well and was raised with liberal values. But to him authoritarian, narrow-minded India is beyond comprehension. Hari’s father, Imran, has strong faith in Indian integration and secularity, but Indian society, where Hindu fundamentalism is gaining power, is not at all turning out like expected. When Imran and his wife fail to find investors for a film they are planning to shoot—largely on account of discrimination against Muslims—they instead turn to friends to make an independent film about the real India. Unlike the title, the film is in black and white until a decisive moment, clearly showing that India is becoming an achromatic society and that sometimes sacrifices are necessary to restore its original diversity and harmony. As is well known, the Indian flag is comprised of orange, white, and green colors, which originally represented Hinduism, Islam, and other religions. The film reflects the strong fear and anxiety about the foundation that undergirds religious conflict.
