Program Note
A masterwork about the status of child trafficking in the Third World. The film begins with a poor family in the developing world. A father is away in a foreign country to earn money, a mother sustains her two sons in poverty, and a younger brother is sick. Little dreamer Iqbal ventures out to sell his pet lamb to get money for his sick brother. But a child trafficker catches Iqbal, sells him and sends him to a strange island. Being forced to weave carpets, he tries to escape. Unlike grownups, who think of only themselves, fearless Iqbal helps all the other children to escape also and reveals this incident to the whole world. Based on a true story, this work is a joint production by Iran, France, and Italy. The various situations are drawn as colorful pictures seen through Iqbal’s eyes. Fantasy mixed with reality amplifies the synergy in this simple and powerful work, while raising awareness of the issue.
