다문화 가정에서 자란 소녀의 성장기. 중국과 이란 부모 사이에 태어난 캐나다 젊은 소녀 로지 밍은 아르바이트를 하면서 혼자 시를 쓴다. 어느 날 이란 시 페스티발에 초대를 받은 그녀는 자신을 돌본 중국 조모의 품을 떠나 생애 첫 혼자 여행을 떠난다. 이란에 도착한 로지 밍은 시인으로서, 이란과 중국과 캐나다를 가로지르는 역사에 대해, 그 사이에 자신의 출생과 가족사에 대해 조금씩 알아간다. 문화와 세대를 가로지르면서 영화는 다문화에 대해 심도 깊은 접근을 시도한다. 특히 작품 내용과 걸맞게 영화는 다문화적인 스타일을 전면에 드러낸다. <나의 첫 번째 세계여행>는 무려 12명이 넘는 애니메이터들의 협업 작품으로, 주인공 로지 밍의 캐릭터와 그녀를 둘러싼 다양한 인물들, 시와 역사와 문화를 다루는 각각의 작화는 애써 통일성을 추구하지 않고 다름을 그대로 담아내 다양성 그 자체를 추구하고 있다. 애써 하나로 녹여내는 방식(melting pot)이 아니라 각각의 문화를 공존시켜 나가는 모자이크 기법이 작품 내용과 형식 모두에 드러나는 흥미로운 작품이다. A coming-of-age story of a girl who grows up in a multi-cultural family. Canadian girl Rosie Ming, with Chinese and Iranian parents, writes poems while working part-time. Invited to a Poetry Festival in Iran, she sets out on a trip alone for the first time in her life, leaving her Chinese grandparents. In Iran, as poet Rosie Ming, she begins to learn about the history intersecting Iran, China and Canada as well as of her birth and her family’s history. Cutting across cultures and generations, the film attempts an in-depth approach to multi-culturalism,embracing a multi-cultural style, befitting its content. Window Horses was created through a collaboration of more than 12 animators, and the character of Rosie Ming, the people around her, pictures related to poems, history, and culture are all drawn differently, aiming for variety and not endeavoring to unify. Instead of being a melting pot, this interesting film adopts a mosaic method that permits co-existence of cultures, both with content and form.
