Program Note
Hunters from Germany and Austria track down wild animals like the bushbuck, impala, zebra, and gnu on the open plains of Africa. Firing their rifles, the hunters shout with excitement and then pose in front of dead animal carcasses. Director Ulrich Seidl turns a spotlight on African Safaris in this documentary, zooming in on white middle-class tourists hunting animals for fun. Acting as observer and investigator, he trains his camera on a family on safari, interviewing them and the conversations they have amongst themselves. Black faces make an appearance within the frame, offering another subjective impression with some sort of tacit message therein. Thoughtless, selfishly motivated white tourists, unhesitatingly killing other species for the thrill of the moment or to boost their self-esteem, are contrasted with local people grimly skinning animals to survive and make a living. Safari is the latest film from Seidl, who joined the ranks of world-class directors with his Paradise trilogy. Before its screening in Busan, the film was shown in the out of competition at Venice Film Festival. (RHEE Souewon)
