Program Note
Boys Run portrays two youths, Minsoo and Sangho, growing up in the Sungmisan Hill Community, demonstrating the community’s simultaneous commonplaceness and specialness. There, freedom to wander is allowed in a natural pace, one that is dream-like within our society overwhelmed with competition over entrance exam. The other main characters are the villagers, who laugh, clap, advise, and support the boys, as the two bouncing youths pass the tunnel of adolescence. Always nearest them is “MacGyver,” with camera in hand. MacGyver, a filmmaker, is one adult of the village as well as the village itself. One unique quality of the film is MacGyver’s camera and the village’s equipollence. Another charm is the bicycle trips that appear many times. The film blends these trips with reckless youths and Seongmisan Hill Community, coining the previously unheard-of new “village youth.” (LEE Seung-min)
