Program Note
Under Japanese occupation in 1933, Joseon’s provisional government plans to assassinate Kawaguchi Mamoru, the Japanese occupation force’s commander in Korea, and pro-Japanese collaborator Gang Ingook. Yeom Seokjin, by Kim Gu’s order, finds three nominees for the mission: top sniper Ahn Ok-yoon, “Quick-fire,” a graduate from the Korean empire’s military academy in Shinheung, and explosives expert Hwang Deoksam. The trio heads for Seoul, where “Hawaii Pistol,” known to do anything for money, awaits them. Conspiracy and betrayal are Choi Dong-hoon’s favorite themes, used in his Tazza: The High Rollers and The Thieves, and as Assassination is set in the 1930s, historical-political issues are put forward on top of those themes. As the clearing of the pro-Japanese group is not done yet in Korean history, the pro-Japanese vs. independence army confrontation gains sympathy from the audience. Another hidden card in Assassination is (Gianna) Jun Ji-Hyun’s double role. (NAM Dong-chul)
