Program Note
Olga hates her body; it’s unattractive and it’s useless. She wants to be free from the trap of physical appearance and it′s the reason why she is unhappy. Olga’s father, who is a prosecutor, feels sorry for her but can nothing to help her. Forced to see the dead every day, the human body is just an object to him. A physicist, Anna, who believes that the mind and body are separate tries to help Olga and her father, but she also has yet to fully liberate herself from the same trap. Director Malgorzata Szumowska, renowned among a young generation in Polish cinema, explores modern society’s desire and anxiety, which the body mirrors. Should one follow or reject the dominant values of physical appearance? We see three people and their emotions and attitudes towards the body; it isn’t just a personal issue but social condition. Actors who are well recognized on the stage play three characters in gripping performances. The film won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2015.
