Program Note
Back home after years in prison, Lao Zhao finds it difficult to readjust to life on the outside. His wife, Siu Chin, has been having an affair with Lao Ma, a police officer who has been taking care of her while Lao Zhao was away. Meanwhile, Ying, Zhao’s daughter, is having a tough time finding a job, and, seemingly more comfortable with being around Lao Ma, will not even talk to her own father. Lao Ma has troubles of his own too. He feels guilty for having accepted an illegal credit card that he’s been using to help Siu Chin through troubled times, which get worse when she is pressured by her school to retire early. After Ying fails an important test that will determine her future, Lao Zhao gets angry and smashes the window of a party secretary’s car in protest, an act which results in him getting arrested again. At the same time, Siu Chin meets a man at a party and begins another relationship, which drives Lao Ma to make a fatal decision. The film’s Chinese title refers to the average Chinese household, which is comprised of two parents and one child. But independent film director Li Ruiqi isn’t after average. Instead, he crafts a realistic portrait of the social ills faced by ordinary Chinese people, including the dissolution of the traditional family structure and the corruption of society.
