In Spain during civil war, a seminarian, Teo, is assigned to a small, remote fortress on the top of the mountain. Teo has to share a tiny place with Silverio who is already stationed there. They argue with each other over all aspects, including their personality, values and way of living. As time passes they come to understand each other and strike the subtle balance of everyday lives together. But the balance starts to shake when Solska, a wounded militia woman, comes and lives with them. The Exile is about faith that blossoms with difficulty in an extreme situation during war. It is far from the normality to live together every day in desperate situations that arise against one’s will. The camera shows two people living in a very small space, and then a strange love triangle after a woman comes between them. This is to criticize the war that is the reason behind all this. The director seems to say that human souls can always twinkle by choosing the right thing no matter how desperate the circumstances are. Wonderfully directed in shooting in a limited space, this feature debut wraps up with an acerbic criticism of war that destroys humanity. (RHEE Soue-won)
