Program Note
Ben is a young boy who lives his parents on a small island with one lonely lighthouse. His mother sings beautiful lullabies for him every night, but dies while giving birth to his sister, Saoirse. When his grandmother finds out that their father has not been able to overcome his grief years later, she brings the children to live with her in the city. Thus begins the brother and sister’s adventure as they embark on a voyage to return to their peaceful island home, leaving the city, its tall buildings and loud noise behind. The film is a beautiful fairy tale that reinterprets Selkies myths, a magical creature that take both seal and human forms, found in Irish folklore. Using simple lines and beautiful colors, it elegantly portrays the vintage and magical aura alive in folklore handed down generation after generation. As the siblings awaken the strange life forms sleeping in different areas of the city, children will be fascinated by what they see and adults will reflect on their forgotten past. (KONG Youngmin)
