Program Note
Bertrand Bonello’s Saint Laurent(2014) is one of the many films that emerged about the world famousfashion desig ner Yves Saint Laurent after his death. But none of the films so comfortably fit the life of Saint Laurent as this one. Bonello’s esthetic world is perfect for depicting Saint Laurent, who had youth, beauty and wealth, and still chose to construct a world full of unrealistic inspirations in his closed quarters. The film is fused with the director’s affection for the designer. It shows in the double entendre of the title, as well as in the unchronological arrangement of the film. The film beautifully depicts the delicate artist, hoping to remember Saint Laurent forever. Bertrand Bonello is famous for his films such as On War(2008), which was acclaimed in Cahiers du Cinema, and House of Tolerance(2011) which was also released in Korea. This is his seventh feature film, and was introduced in the main competition section of the Cannes Film Festival. (RHEE Soue-won)
