Program Note
In this black comedy set against the backdrop of the Malaysian jungle, a quiet village’s wise leader, Pak Awang, decides to relocate an abandoned house in the jungle with the help of the villagers, to give it to his soon to be married daughter. One day, Solomon, an African man fencing stolen goods in Kuala Lumpur, escapes from the police and hides in the abandoned house. A young gay man who passing by the house sees Solomon’s shadow and thinks it’s a ghost. A sorcerer predicts that the ghost from the abandoned house will rape the girls in village. This film reflects the melting pot of Malaysia’s multicultural society and is rife with political metaphors. Noisy, fussy slapstick and satirical black comedy are put together, but when you see it from a step away, its bitter funniness is unreasonable, like the rest of the cruel world. One might become uncomfortable with the homophobia and disparagement of race, and sidelined female characters. But regardless, the film is full of energy and insight about the community spirit.
