Program Note
The debut feature by China’s Xin Yukun following critical acclaim for his short Seven Nightstook himthree years to bring to screens. The original title in Chinese refers to the coffin in which to lay the dead body for a funeral. The film is set in a countryside village where a son struggles to step out fromunder the control of his strict father, who is the village head. The son learns his girlfriend is pregnant and ends up killing a young villager, Bai Hu, by accident when he discovers the man eavesdropping. The son, who was thinking of leaving the village, decides to give himself up, but Bai Hu’s funeral is already taking place. Someone has cremated Bai Hu’s body, which eventually exposes the village secret. Structured into three episodes titled, “Pregnancy,” “Secret” and “Coffin,” the film is superb in its psychological details and observing the case from various points-of-view. At the same time it utilizes a unique and interesting method of directing, which explores the causal relationship through a narrative that is repeated in parallel order. (KANG Naeyoung)
