Program Note
After deciding to make a film about the genocide of 182,000 Kurdish people by Iraq in 1988, Hussein and Alan face obstacles in the project from the beginning. Their lead actress, a former teacher, comes attached with an interfering chaperon uncle, and a fiance. The lead actor was a famous singer, and is as arrogant as it gets. They run out of money and the extras from refugee camps don’t know what to do. Then the director has a family crises to deal with. For Hussein and Alan it just gets worse and worse. The trouble and fuss may seem amusing but we can’t laugh while the duo tries desperately to make a film about this tragic history. Can they finish making the film? Will the film be a happy ending? Memories on Stone is an homage to Yol (1982) by Yılmaz Guney, winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1982. The road to the finished film may be annoying but the final shot leaves a lasting impression.
