Program Note
A series of mishaps occur overnight at a love hotel located in the famous Kabukicho red light district, where people with shady secrets and conspiracies flock to. The film begins on a light note, with a young lady singing and playing guitar, but over the course of 24 hours more secrets are divulged by the hour, building tension that reaches a boiling point. Various issues haunting Japan - the great earthquake and nuclear plant explosions, youth unemployment, Korean immigrants living as second-class citizens, prostitution and the porn industry, problems in the entertainment industry - all explode around the love hotel. Individual desires clash, yet the people whose lives revolve around the hotel seem to have a better understanding of each other’s situations, offering a kind of consolation. When the commotion passes and daybreak arrives, everyone dreams of a better life, but nothing is guaranteed as their conditions are the same as the day before. Only the different location from where the singing lady’s song comes from suggests the possibility for a life different than yesterday. (CHO Hyeyoung)
