Four orphan boys, without identities, earn a daily wage as porters in a big market. They find amusement in stealing a glance at the schoolgirls passing by. A shop owner who considers them her own sons helps them to ask the market manager to lend them an unused shop in the market. They open a hotel and soon gain success. At last, they earn money and reputations, but their success is fragile. The manager’s cousin comes into their life when he rapes a woman in the hotel and the furious boys humiliate him in public. The boys are like a lemon soda that remains calm when untouched but explosive when shaken. More challenges await them shortly after they earn their hard won place in society. One of the biggest hits of 2013, this Massala movie was a critical hit as well. The two hour-plus narrative is well organized and the tension carries through to the end. A former cinematographer, Vijay Milton makes the most of his budget to create a vivid sense of place and scenes that pulsate with life. (PARK Sungho)
