Program Note
Unfolding in the 2000-year-old Portuguese city of Guimaraes, renowned directors, Jean-Luc Godard and Peter Greenaway and the Portuguese experimental author Edgar Pera have produced and combined three cinema episodes. The directors explore how 3D affects the audience and their perceptions. Celebrating the selection of Guimaraes as a European Capital of Culture 2012, the film was planned with Portuguese capital. The participation of the world-renowned directors drew great attention. The film is meaningful in that it points out today’s use of 3D for entertaining purposes and that it explores the enormous artistic potential of 3D and the changes it may bring to the future of cinema. The episodes made by the three directors take place against the background of this city. Greenaway’s Juste a Temps is a unique episode in which a five-minute plan-sequence is repeated in the morning, noon and evening; each time of the day represents a different era. Godard’s short film The Three Disasters is an attempt to explain the history of 3D film while Pera’s Cine Sapiens is special in that it encompasses different genres and periods. The film was screened to close the International Critics′ Week of this year’s Cannes International Film Festival. (RHEE Soue-won)
