Program Note
Rajini says that she has just survived a civil war dispute and requests asylum. She starts to tell the tale of how she came from a rural orphanage, and what her living conditions there were like. Having begun his directing career in India, Director Santosh Sivan announces the arrival of another masterpiece, in which he takes the theme of civilian massacre during Sri Lanka’s civil war and weaves it into the documentary-style character and story. The beginning scenes of the orphanage are full of peace, happiness and energy and similar in style like Filipino Director Kidlat Tahimik, and Rajini’s expressionless narration and fluid movements of the camera recalls certain Terrence Malick films. The unique angles used to portray point of view shots by the handy camera tells us that the film is interested in communication between the characters and the audience. The heavy fireworks of the war and the destruction of the peace and happiness in the orphanage remind us that we are still living in an ever-warring present. (PARK Jinhee)
