Program Note
A documentary film dealing with the artistic world of the wuxia film master King Hu, the artist who took wuxia cinema in Hong Kong to a new level. Differentiating himself from hiscontemporaries?Chang Cheh, Li Han Hsiang?and creating a more sensitive and elegant wuxia world, Hu asserted a unique style that broke the conventions of traditionally maleoriented wuxia films. But his innovative artistry always clashed with commercial needs. The film shows his unique and original wuxia film world on the one hand, and also unearths production stories, such as his conflicts with The Shaw Brothers, which was leading Hong Kong’s wuxia film industry at the time, and his eventual emigration to Taiwan. Also, we see Hu when he was a comedy actor before he was a director and those interviews, combined with some scenes from the films, all enrich the experience about his film world. The film lets us contextualize Hu’s films and look at the man himself, one of the most influential directors for today’s Chinese and Hong Kong film directors. (CHO Young-jung)
