Program Note
This movie shows a huge development in Korean melodramas. The three main characters are an elderly man who is a great poet, a young writer who is the poet’s student with no special talent but envies the old man’s great talent, and a 17-year-old sensual girl named Eun-gyo, who comes and goes between the two men. The movie deals with their love triangle, which is full of desire and lust. The director made this movie in a free way based on the novel with the same title by Park Bum-shin. The novel uses the girl as a messenger who connects the two men, whereas the movie makes the best use of visual media by putting the fatally charming Eun-gyo at the center of the movie. Without Kim Go-eun, a student of Korea National University of Arts majoring in drama, this image could not have been made. Of course, the image is not everything that she has for this movie. Not to mention her nude scenes where she shockingly shows off her acting skill, she handles all aspects of her performance well, including her line acting and close-up acting. Kim deserves to be a combination of Jeon Do-yeon and Son Ye-jin. Park Hae-il plays his role of an old man turning seventy naturally, and Kim Mu-yeol delivers a good performance as well. (JEON Chanil)
