Through the roaring thunderstorm and tossing of the sea, the voice of Quincas who is dead for the second time, echoes in the air. When the popular bum dies before his 72nd birthday, his friends from the slum pass the news to his daughter Vanda. Two groups of people compete over Quincas′s casket ? his family insisting on a proper conventional burial and his friends who want to respect the old friend’s dying wish ? to be buried at sea. It’s a delightful comedy that turns death into one big feast. Based on solid narrative elements such as a conflict between the slum of Bahia and the upper class that place emphasis on formality, reuniting father and daughter after 15 years and an examination of death, the director takes a fresh twist by taking the perspective of the deceased. Music is light and merry but at the same time, somewhat sorrowful. The use of spells and surrealism adds a Latin-American touch. The scuffle scene that takes place during the second birthday party is a superbly choreographed slapstick moment with music, editing and acting all in perfect harmony. This is the second feature by Sergio Machado who garnered critical acclaim at Cannes with his directorial debut [Paradise] in 2005. (RHEE Soue-won)
