Program Note
For a better future and to support her family, Amelia goes to a country in the Middle East and works as a maid at the Sheik’s palace. A long waited heir, Ahmed is born and Amelia becomes his nanny. One day, the war breaks out and she runs away with Ahmed to save his life. The Philippines is one of rare Asian countries that has a strong tradition of the musical along with India. Emir is a fine example of this tradition. Even though the film takes the most popular genre of musical, it chooses the immigrant labor which has been one of the most problematic social issues. From the 1970s, the immigrant labor of the Middle East region has brought hope and despair to the Filipino labors. While the film captures the social awareness, combines the issue with the story of nanny who save the royal heir and thus brings out the romanticism of the musical. It shines with an attraction of Filipino musical mixed with popularity and social consciousness. (CHO Young-jung)
