Program Note
Three homeless Russian boys go to Poland in hopes of better future. The boys clutch on to hope that any place will be better than their homeland which has neglected them. Therefore, although the underlining themes of the film may be as wretched as can be, the illustration of the premise is never miserable. It can even be seen as light and cheerful, for the boys march toward their dream in a hopeless reality. The experiences from their long journey demonstrate the irony. Despite the fear of getting caught and deported out of Poland, the boys enjoy their voyage. Who couldn’t enjoy an experience of running into a couple deep into the act of love? In this manner, the title of this film is a paradox and of course ironic. It is also a manifestation of the director’s endless hope for children. Truthfully, the biggest inspiration from this film is in the glimpses of innocence that these boys possess. Although surely first time actors themselves, the boys, through their realistic acting, contributes to the dramatic effect of the film. Overall, the film can be said to be modern Polish version of neo-realism. (JEON Chanil)
