Program Note
In 1972, Moriati, Massina and Maccio are young soldiers in the French Navy. They are in the middle of the open sea on a naval vessel. Their lives are strictly controlled and disciplined. While enduring tediousness and violence in the unit, they are ordered to participate in a nuclear test. [Ocean Black] is a film by a world-famous female Belgian director Marion Hansel. This new film was invited in Venice Days at the Venice International Film Festival. The first scene of the film shows a blue and green river. But the scene soon changes to show a black sea where the nuclear test will happen. This is the formal correspondence of the theme of the film. It is touching when young soldiers agonize over what to do and resist the reality: they have to lose their innocence and learn to be cruel as they get old. The line where the main character says “A very short moment I lost the faith in myself, something was broken” shows the pitiable truth of being an adult. The sea is constantly shown in various colors which show impressive images. This may reflect the thoughts and concerns of the main characters. The ending voices strong criticism towards a nuclear powered France. (RHEE Soue-won)
