Do the elderly still feel passion? Liu Hao addresses the lives of the elderly in a somewhat different way from other films. This is a story about older people who make their own decisions about their lives and enjoy the world in their own way instead of relying on their children. It also makes a sincere comment on the issue of people who are marginalized in Chinese society because they suffer from Alzheimer’s. Old Pop, who lives alone after retirement, runs into Li Ying at the market. They had been each other’s first love, and so they begin a clandestine relationship despite opposition from their families, despite them being too busy making a living to tend to their parents’ loneliness. When Old Pop learns that Li Ying has Alzheimer’s, he decides to take care of her himself. The repeated conversations between the two are ruminations on their past, but also a way to stave off the disease. Unfortunately, Old Pop himself begins to show signs of Alzheimer’s and things take a new turn. Director Liu Hao took the risk of using non-professional actors, but their performances blend all too naturally with the story. (KIM Ji-seok)
