Program Note
Francis and Marie are best friends. They attend a party and fall in love with Nicolas at first sight who seems like a reincarnation of Adonis. The two pretend to be indifferent to Nicolas, who is gentle and nice to both of them. What is the truth behind his heart? The film is the second feature from Xavier Dolan, a promising young Canadian director who won the Golden Camera Award at Cannes 2009. The story talks about the universal theme of ‘love and friendship’, but told in a unique way with a love triangle and homosexual context. As he played the main role in [I Killed My Mother], Dolan once again plays an introverted gay man in this film. Splendid colors and excellent choice of music prove his young and new talent which also will entertain the audiences throughout the whole film. [Heartbeats] was introduced in the Un Certain Regard at this year’s Cannes festival. It received favorable reviews from the press and ensured the brilliant directing talent of a young director in his early 20s. (RHEE Soue-won)
