Program Note
Once a naughty boy interested in photography, Nicolas becomes a filmmaker when he grows up. But after his film becomes an object of censorship due to its criticism about Georgian regime, he leaves for Paris looking for freedom with his childhood friend. He writes scripts in a house owned by his grandfather′s old friend, and in the end, the day of his premiere finally arrives. [Chantrapas] is an autobiographical film by Georgian maestro Otar Iosseliani, which was screened as a special program at Cannes. It is a self-reflective film that makes audiences look back on freedom of creation, love for arts, and meaning of filmmaking. Its fluid and observatory camera movements are often accompanied by abrupt cuts, which quietly makes noticeable its subject matter, that is, censorship on editing. It is also rich in love for his childhood representing his hometown Georgia, and particularly, his grandfather who was a central fixture of the era. The last scene of the film is unforgettable, implying his love using silence along with beautiful fantasy. (RHEE Soue-won)
