Program Note
To director Chang Tso-chi, the ‘family’ is a miniature version of Taiwanese society, and the most important element in finding the true meaning of life. Thus his films have consistently told stories
of family problems. He does it again with When Love Comes, on a much deeper scale.
Laichun, her father and two mothers, uncle and grandfather are of different generations; thus they all think differently. Her father, the head of the family, took two wives because he believes that he
must carry on the family line. His first wife agrees to his thought and allows him to take second wife. Laichun feels distant from her parents, and gets discouraged because of unplanned pregnancy
and her irresponsible boyfriend. When her father is hospitalized, she begins to understand her father and two mothers. She is finally growing up.
Chang Tso-chi has special interest in the process by which generation gaps are bridged. In this point, it is significant that this film begins and ends with the scenes of birth. (KIM Ji-seok)
