Program Note
This is Abbas Kiarostami’s first feature made abroad. Juliette Binoche and William Shimell, a British opera singer debuting as an actor, deliver outstanding performances. James Miller visits Tuscany on a book tour and meets ‘her’, a woman who works at an art gallery, and they go on a sightseeing tour of Tuscany. After they are mistaken for a married couple in a restaurant, they start to think and act like one. To that end, their conversation turns from the intellectual to the emotional. The theme of ‘genuine vs. forgery’ is woven throughout, from conversation to relationship. In an art gallery, the couple ponders a painting, Muse Polimnia-a fake that was believed to be genuine for 200 years. It remained on exhibit simply because it is such a great piece of work; time must have played an important role in this appraisal. Both Miller and ‘she’ know the depth of life as an aged wine, and at the same time hold on to romance. Their journey through the sunlit streets of Tuscany will remain in our memories long after the film ends. (KIM Ji-seok)
