Program Note
Ann Hui’s characteristic interests stand out when she pushes a theme with her melodramatic sensibility and social realistic view, and All about Love is a film that reveals that talent well. As a film
about homosexuality and the possibility of establishing a homosexual community, the film raises a question of whether an ideal community-formed with two women loving each other, two men
who made them pregnant, and the friends around them-is sustainable in this patriarchal society. Following the conventions of melodrama, the film lightly touches on social disadvantages and
the inner anguish of the characters as they ultimately overcome various hardships. But the film contains a genuine power, making the story persuasive. It succeeds by relying on the director’s
strong vision of gazing at the optimistic energy of the characters. Above all, the film captures the scenery of Hong Kong in great, unprecedented detail. (KIM Young-jin)
