Program Note
The way in which [Haeundae] develops its plot can be considered a Koreanized transformation of Hollywood romantic narratives in the pre and post 1950’s. Man-sik and Yeon-hee see-saw, while being unsure as to whether they can be a couple who overcomes past wounds. Dr. Kim, who cautions against a possible mega-tsunami at Haeundae, collapses in an agony springing from an unexpected turn-up of his daughter and divorced wife. Hyoung-sik, after rescuing a woman from Seoul, rides out a ferocious storm to gladden her heart.
The aspect of linking disaster and romance together is also seen in [Titanic]. A tsunami which destroys Haeundae symbolizes the establishment of a typical axis called provocation of conflicts, and later the inner spaces of the couples without anything left behind after all conflicts have ended. An encounter between the state-of-the-art Korean filming technology and the classic narrative has gained tremendous enthusiasm from Koreans, stirring up their emotions quite powerfully.
