Program Note
Young-soo’s pining for a married woman reminds us of [The Sorrows of Young Werther]. Lost in his despair, he is wandering around Cheong Gye Cheon in Seoul, where he meets Sun-hwa, who is also despairing for love. Elsewhere, Mee-yeon suffers agony from loving Young-soo. Through them and other lovers, the story provides its own interpretation of the popular view about love and suffering. Director Jung Sung-il at times spans the torment of the individuals for over ten minutes, in his own method of depicting their pain. Many parts of the film incorporate much about Korean cinema. [Cafe Noir] is the meeting place for different types of films, a reconstruction of love, and at the same time a stroll through downtown Seoul. (LEE Sang-yong)
