Reza, an ordinary factory worker, must return his wife’s dowry when they get a divorce. Because of problems in their marriage, his wife Zari wants a divorce. After doing everything he can to try to scrounge up the money, he must make a final decision. Rather than focusing on the conventional story of the patriarchal marriage life in Islamic society, Director Payman Haghani tells a more common story about a married couple. Although the story brings up Iranian divorce dealing with dowry amounts, the married couple are on equal footing. It brings to light the basic problems of marriage rather than that of certain societal traditions or the patriarchal order. It also explores Reza’s anguish over his reputation as the husband exposes the unique values of Iranian society. Though he lost his authority, he depicts the man who wants to hang on to his responsibilities. This is one of the changing facets of the Iranian society.
