Inspired by the director’s own experience, [I’m in Trouble!] shows a typical love story during our time. A third-rate poet meets and separates with his girlfriend repeatedly and becomes entangled with his acquaintance and an editor of a publishing company whom the acquaintance likes. A shabby intellectual protagonist using embarrassingly greasy words of love may remind the world of Hong Sangsoo, but the film is much more cheerful and direct. The shabby poet’s Don Quixote-like wandering comically represents the commonplace lifestyle of today. His tread on ready-made troubles presents us a relieving opportunity of self-reflection with jeering sympathy. Alone with the characters’ sensual language, [I’m in Trouble!] draws a sincere self-portrait of our time. (LEE Sang-yong)
