[Dead Slowly] throws doubt and skepticism into the “relationship” between people. It depicts a man who gets into a motorcycle accident, his wife Mei, younger sister, and mother. It also tells the story of Ying, a young woman, who is murdered in their home, policeman Jing who is investigating the case, and his wife Yin, who is having an affair with a fellow policeman. They are all connected. The more Jing tries to solve the case, the more cryptic their relationship becomes, and past memories come to light. Director Rita Hui displays their strange relationships from a powerful viewpoint. Also, as much as they loved one another at one point, the futility and deceit of such love is unveiled. Just as the blood that flows from Mei’s eyes grows to become the Blood Tree that fills up an entire wall, ambiguity and intensity are the dominating motives behind this story.
