Program Note
A documentary director documents the curing process of patients while following the past and present of the staffs and patients in the mental hospital. This film follows the changes of a middle aged man He Zhiyuan, who is admitted at Island Hospital, suffering from aphasia due to the aftershock of murdering his wife. He has special feelings for one of the patients, Beatrix, but he is about to leave the hospital. As the title indicates, ‘Here’, is an isolated place like an ‘island’, that is, the hospital is the place where people are recovering or being treated for something lost or damaged in ‘there’, where is the reality. Examining the distinction of here and there, fact and manipulation, and memory and belief, this film goes further to ask the line between the reality and the film. It also follows the internally trapped trauma with a documentary approach using clips, interviews and daily records. Despite having minimal and unrelated dialogues and situations, its non-linear flow of the story amazingly leads the narrative clearly in one direction. (CHO Young-jung)
