Program Note
Matsumoto Hitoshi’s second film [Symbol] (2009) follows a popular and charismatic comedian in Japan and is similar to [Dai Nipponjin] (2007), and [Big Man Japan] (American Version). It has brilliant wit and shows the work of a surreal and original imagination. One man is stuck in a room surrounded by white walls and tries to do everything possible to get out. In the meantime, he finds a projection, that looks like a penis (a symbol), and uses it to escape, but all of his attempts are laughable. Like [Dai Nipponjin] (2007), its plot and satirical finale will make the audience unable to mention any specific details about this film, which only shows the director′s craftsmanship as a comedian. But what Mr. Matsumoto shows in [Symbol] (2009) as a director does not only impress upon us on how talented he is, but also reminds us of how basic his skill is, which is always easy to ignore: "Movie is a language through individual motion pictures.” The restrained dialog and scenes create impressive moments throughout.
