Program Note
Very little is truly understood about post-partum depression and the number of women it affects is greatly underestimated. Motherhood is the apex of womanhood, and the shame and bitterness of not responding to the task “properly” can be devastating. In Rodrigue Jean’s latest feature, Pierre and Elisabeth are a young couple with a newborn that move to a cottage for a relaxing summer. All seems well and the pair seems happy, with Pierre working in the city and Elisabeth rehearsing for a performance at home. However, she is also falling victim to intense feelings of isolation, and is often overwhelmed by her new role as mother. A series of innocuous mishaps plunges Elisabeth into distress, threatens her relationship with her baby, and leads to fatal violence when no one recognizes her anguish. Lost Song treads an emotional minefield from which there is no escape for anyone.
