As an Albanian immigrant living in Belgium, Lorna is trapped in a static life. Unable to feel completely secure, she is married to a Belgian junkie, Claudy, and falls into a scheme with a local gangster that she hopes will secure her future. When she discovers the plan for a second sham marriage involves Claudy’s death, she is torn between acting in her own best interests and doing what is right. Making a subtle shift toward traditional narrative, the Dardennes’ latest is almost a thriller, replete with plot twists and shocks. But in keeping with the observational tone of the critically acclaimed Palme d’Or winner The Child, the brothers’ downbeat, bleak vision of middle Europe (in this case Liege) is once again front and center. Europe’s dark underbelly is exposed as a contradictory, cutthroat world where fulfillment is out of reach for the masses that exist in the margins.
