Program Note
Set in the steppes of Central Asia, the film is about the solitude and psychological wandering of humans. When Ivan’s son is born with black hair and dark skin, Ivan, who is a Russian, suspects his Kazakh friend Assan. Fifteen years later, Ivan leaves home after quarreling with his wife’s relatives. Asaan leaves home, too, and his son Sasha rides to the steppes. Ivan meets his grandfather and discovers that his great-grandfather had married a Kazakh woman, thus, solves the mystery of hisson’s appearance. The tragedy that took place in Kazakhstan and Russia from the 19th century to the early 20th century still continues to the present, but not just for historical reasons. The soul that wanders in the steppes symbolizes the solitude of mankind. Therefore, the wandering of Ivan, Assan, and Sasha is sure to touch the audience’s heart. (KIM Ji-Seok)
