Program Note
In his previous film The Gate of Truth, Director KIM Hee Chul dealt with the unsolved murder case of Lieutenant KIM Hoon. His new film Not Guilty also starts with a mystery case. The Gate of Truth was very much affected by the director’s personal point of view on the case because he also dropped out of the military academy. On the other hand, Not Guilty is a testimony of a case that happened in the spring of 1981 and shows broader point of view of the director. In the early 1980s, the period of political chaos, a family of 7 members is falsely accused of espionage. Investigators torture and threaten them into false confession and the innocent family from Jindo countryside becomes a scapegoat of a political conspiracy. As a result, they end up spending 18 years in prison. The tragedy of the case caused by our lack of interest and negligence of the people from their village is beyond our imagination. Director KIM Hee Chul calls our attention to a missing part of our history that remains now as a scar. And it is the testimony of survivors -or their desperate scream- that evoke a violent and irrational aspect of Korean history. (HONG Hyosook)
