Program Note
Min, an orphan girl, sets off to study with a renowned botanist. A secretive man and authoritarian father, the professor lives on an island that he has transformed into a luxurious garden. Obliged to share this solitary, withdrawn life, his daughter, An, is delighted by Min′s arrival, hoping it will break the solitude of her life. The girls quickly become friends and find that their attraction to each other grows into a sensual and forbidden relationship. Despite the tragic ending that they are punished for being infected with disease called, "homosexuality", the film maintains with sentimental music and aesthetical camera work. Lesbianism and Orient are rather described exotically in the film. Instead of dealing with essence of lesbianism, it ends with sentimentalism of "forbidden love". [The Chinese Botanist′s Daughters] couldn′t get any help from Chinese government because China officially prohibits homosexuality. France and Canada invested for the film to be done and it was filmed in Vietnam. (Mina Oak)
