Program Note
Director Royston Tan refers to 4:30 a.m. as the loneliest time because it is too late to sleep and too early to wake, and the film earnestly describes that solitude. However the subject who speaks of it is different from other films. An elementary school student and a man in his early thirties share the feeling of solitude and each of them has his own story of loneliness. Xiao Wu, the student, lives alone away from his parents for a while, and a Korean man who is a tenant in Xiao Wu`s house has lost his lover. There is no connection between them that will make them sympathize with each other except that they live in the same place. It is not simply because of the curiosity that Xiao Wu sneaks into the Korean man`s room at 4:30 a.m. everyday and ferrets about. When Xiao Wu reads his essay titled `My Hero` in front of his class, he mentions his father and the Korean man. He might be a hero for Xiao Wu, but ultimately the young boy thinks he is the very man who shares the solitude with him. This unnatural relationship paradoxically communicates with the audience about solitude. (Kim Ji-seok)
