Program Note
It is stunning film fully showing Mohsen Makhmalbaf′s pathos. Who else can create the lyrical images and convey the philosophical introspection as ingeniously as Makhmabaf accomplishes in the film? Jân, an instructor at a dance school decides to dump his present life and start a new life on his 40th birthday. He invites four women, who he falls in love with, to his dance school, each at different times. In doing so, a nonlinear narrative is constructed with crossing the present time and full account of his loves with each woman; four definitions of love come from it. Jân having looked for innocent love suggests a doleful conclusion on love. According to the data measured by stopwatch, in spite of the prolonged history of love, the joy and happiness from love continues only for several minutes, no more than a few hours at the maximum. The love starts from casual and trifle occurrences and sadly ends with loneliness. A blind person′s song at the opening and closing testifies to the truth. The blessed candle lights as your life is the bloom and your love is flowering, go out one by one and the only one perilously fluttering in the wind lights up the lonely fate. (Lee Wang-joo)
