Program Note
The Cave of the Yellow Dog is a story about a Mongolian family and their dog. Nonsal, the six-year-old daughter, brings home a dog she finds in a cave. But her father says she can′t keep the dog since they don′t know where the dog came from, and it might have a bad influence on the family. But Nansal can′t obey her father on this. When the family moves to another camp, their relationship with the dog is revealed. Reincarnation is at the base of this film about the relationship between a family and a dog. The family′s belief in reincarnation teaches them to have respect for the living, but at te same time, it makes them fearful of other beings. However, that fear isn′t about pushing others away. They make the utmost effort to be reborn as human beings in their next life, as they believe being reborn in human form is most difficult of all. The documentary-like film casts a loving eye on the family′s way of life, and that is what keeps the audience attracted. It excites our eyes just to see the scene where the parents and their three children move, with their loads of possessions and dozens of sheep. The Cave of the Yellow Dog, by director Byambasuren Davaa, is an anthropological report written by a camera.(Kang So-won)
